MOUNT PLEASANT - A trio of Iowa Wesleyan College athletes received Midwest Collegiate Conference Athlete of the Week honors as the conference's weekly awards were announced Monday afternoon.
Iowa Wesleyan swept the MCC baseball awards as Elliot Armstrong
) was named Baseball Player of the Week and Jacob Sanchez
) was honored as Baseball Pitcher of the Week. In addition, Blake Mitchell
) was also recognized as the MCC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week.
Armstrong was honored after a great week at the plate in which he hit .647, with 11 hits in 17 at bats. He hit four doubles, scored seven runs and drove in seven, and including a walk he finished the week with a .667 on-base percentage. Armstrong was especially big in a 15-3 win over St. Ambrose University last Monday, going 5-for-7 with four doubles and six RBIs in a blowout win over the eventual MCC regular season champions.
Armstrong has become one of the Tigers' top hitters and currently leads the MCC in hitting with a .392 average. He has 40 hits in 107 at bats, seven doubles, one home run, 17 RBIs and seven stolen bases. Over his last eight games he is hitting .630 with 17 hits and has raised his batting average 85 points.
Sanchez joined Armstrong in playing a big part as the Tigers posted a 4-0 record on the week and clinched a spot in the MCC Postseason Tournament. The senior pitcher was 2-0 in two starts, pitching ten scoreless innings and allowing just three hits while striking out 11 and walking one. He departed both games early as his teammates helped him build huge leads, but still lowered his earned run average to 2.01 on the season.
Sanchez is having one of the best seasons ever by an Iowa Wesleyan pitcher, having already set the school single season record for strikeouts with 103 and tying the IWC single season record for wins with ten. In 85 innings he has allowed just 62 hits, 20 runs (19 earned) and has walked just ten while holding opposing hitters to a .201 batting average.
Mitchell concluded the Tiger men's golf season with a terrific performance at the Scot-Fire Invitational this past weekend, winning medalist honors to capture the MCC's weekly honor for the second time this spring. He shot identical rounds of 70 on both the first and second days of the tourney, finishing at four-under par to win the individual title in dominating fashion by seven strokes and leading Wesleyan to a sixth-place team finish.
Mitchell concluded a spring in which he finished in the top ten in five of six events that IWC entered, including titles at a pair of tournaments. He finished with a 74.4 stroke average per round, shooting four rounds below par in the spring and a total of six rounds at par or better.
The fourth-seeded Iowa Wesleyan baseball team begins MCC Tournament play on Tuesday against #5 seed William Penn University. The game starts at noon at A.J. Spiegel Park in Peosta, Iowa, and a live audio broadcast will be available at http://www.iwc.edu/onlinemedia.
