Blake Mitchell (So.-Loveland, Colo.) capped a terrific spring season for the Iowa Wesleyan College men's golf team with a dominating performance in taking medalist honors at the Scot-Fire Invitational hosted by Knox (Ill.) and Monmouth (Ill.) Colleges.
Mitchell finished the two-day tourney at four-under par, shooting rounds of 70 on both the first and second days to win the individual title by seven shots. He was tournament medalist for the second time this spring and led IWC to a sixth-place finish in the team standings at the tourney.
The Tigers finished with a two-day score of 640, shooting 324 to come in eighth after the first day but coming back with a score of 316 on the second day to move up two spots in the final standings. The tourney was played on two different courses, with the first round at Soangetaha Country Club in Galesburg, Ill., and the final round at Gibson Woods Golf Course in Monmouth.
Mitchell finished off IWC's season in style, recording his fifth top ten finish in six tourneys. He won his second tourney of the spring and finished with a 74.4 stroke average in 12 rounds in the spring, including four rounds below par and a total of six rounds at par or below. He led from start to finish, leading by two strokes after the first day and pulling away for a convincing win on Saturday.
The lone senior on the Tiger team,
Kyle Emerson (
Mount Pleasant, Iowa) completed his career tying for 44th individually with rounds of 82 and 83 for a total of 165.
Trent Hoekstra (
Fr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) tied Emerson with a score of 165, shooting 84 on Friday and finishing with a round of 81 on Saturday.
Clint Phelps (
Jr.-Quincy, Ill.) tied for 52nd with a score of 170 (88-82), and
Brett Brodersen (
Jr.-Visalia, Calif.) finished 64th with a total of 183 that included rounds of 94 and 89.
Monmouth won the team title with a score of 608, including scores of 299 on Friday and 309 on Saturday, with Carl Sandburg (Ill.) Community College (616) second and Carroll (Wis.) University (622) third.
