OSKALOOSA - Just two outs from being swept in a doubleheader, the Iowa Wesleyan College baseball team scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 5-1 win over William Penn University in the second game of a Midwest Collegiate Conference twinbill Wednesday.
The Tigers rebounded from a 2-1 loss to the Statesmen in the first game, staying just ahead of Penn in the conference standings at the end of the day. IWC is now 10-10 in the MCC (17-29 overall) and in winning percentage is tied with Waldorf College (9-9 in MCC) for fourth in the conference, while William Penn is now 8-9 in league play (15-22 overall).
On the verge of a third straight loss this season to the Statesmen, IWC batted around in the seventh inning of the second game. Todd Christensen

) added an RBI single. Christensen delivered the hit that put the Tigers ahead, scoring Christian Arredondo

) with a double off reliever Jayme Mueller, who had just come on in relief of starter Brad McGuire.
Koeppel followed two batters later with another double off Mueller, scoring Christensen and Michael Mendoza

), who was intentionally walked after hits in his first three at bats of the game. Koeppel moved to third on a passed ball and came home as Jurgesmeyer singled to center to cap the five-run rally.Josh Kwasny

). Cambruzzi pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed seven hits and one earned run before Kwasny came on and pitched 1 1/3, allowing a single hit. Keith Bullock

The Tigers badly needed the win in the nightcap after being shut down by Jorge Quezada in the opener. Quezada held Wesleyan to five hits and snuffed out a seventh inning rally for a complete game win.
Penn scored single runs in the third and fourth innings off IWC starter Joseph Neilson
), who pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed six hits and two earned runs. The Tigers didn't advance a runner past second until the seventh when Mendoza led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Koeppel's single up the middle. Any potential rally ended quickly, though, as Ryan Doeppel
) bunted hard back to the mound and into a 1-6-3 double play, and Corey Amerson

) flied out to end the game.
The Tigers have four games left in the regular season, all against MCC opponents. IWC next will play Monday against St. Ambrose University in a game rescheduled from earlier in the season. Game time for the nine-inning single game will be 6 p.m. in Davenport. Wesleyan will conclude its regular season next weekend, April 27-28 with a three-game series in La Crosse, Wis., against Viterbo (Wis.)
