Women's Basketball/Men's Track - Mon, Feb 20, 2012
MOUNT PLEASANT - Iowa Wesleyan College was well represented in this week's Midwest Collegiate Conference Athlete of the Week honors, as three Tiger athletes were honored in the latest awards announced by the conference on Monday.

Senior guard Anna Jones (Cornell, Ill.) was named the MCC Women's Basketball Player of the Week, while Keith Brown (Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) is the MCC Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week. IWC baseball player Joseph Neilson (Jr.-Bakersfield, Calif.) also received the initial MCC Baseball Pitcher of the Week award for this year.

Jones was named Player of the Week for the fourth time this season after averaging 20.5 points, ten rebounds, two assists and two steals per game last week. The 5-7 guard shot 48.1% from the field, 55.6% from three-point range and 76.9% from the free throw line as the Tigers split a pair of games.

Jones had a huge game Wednesday in an 83-74 loss to No. 13 ranked Mount Mercy University, scoring 29 points and pulling down ten rebounds while shooting 10-for-16 from the field, including 4 of 6 from three-point range. She added 12 points, ten rebounds and three steals despite being limited by foul trouble in a 69-62 win over St. Ambrose University on Saturday.

It is the seventh time in her stellar four-year career that Jones has won the MCC's weekly honor. This season she is averaging 19.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.7 steals per game while shooting 48.0% from the field, 38.2% from behind the three-point arc and 79.9% from the charity stripe. She ranks no lower than seventh in the conference in any of those seven categories and continues to lead the MCC and rank second nationally in steals per game.

Brown picks up MCC honors for the second time in his freshman year after winning the 55-meter hurdles and finishing second in the 55 meters at the A.Y. McDonald Invitational hosted by the University of Dubuque on Saturday. He finished in 7.68 in the hurdles, just off his school record and NAIA ‘A' standard time of 7.65 set earlier this year. He also ran the 55 meters in 6.67 seconds, .08 off his best time in that event set the week before at the MCC Indoor Championships.

Brown has set school records in both the 55 hurdles and 200 this year and is qualified for the 60-meter hurdles at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Geneva, Ohio, March 1-3. His adjusted time of 8.18 projected out over 60 meters ranks him third in the country in the 60 hurdles heading into the national championships.

Neilson provided one of several strong pitching performances by the Iowa Wesleyan baseball team this past weekend as the Tigers opened their season with a 3-1 record. Included in the wins were a pair of victories against 12th-ranked Union (Ky.) College, and Neilson capped the weekend with a seven-inning complete game win over the Bulldogs.

Neilson allowed eight hits and one run while striking out four and walking three as Wesleyan picked up a 3-1 win over Union on Saturday, the second win over the Bulldogs in two days. IWC also split a pair of games against Shawnee State (Ohio) University over its two days in Barbourville, Ky., to start the season. Neilson won the conference award for the first time in his first season with the team after transferring to Iowa Wesleyan from Bakersfield Community College.

The IWC women's basketball team begins play in the MCC Tournament Thursday night as the third-seeded Tigers host No. 6 seed St. Ambrose in a quarterfinal at 7 p.m. at Ruble Arena. The Tiger baseball team will be on the road again this weekend for a four-game series at Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College in Columbia, Ky., with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
