Women's Soccer - Wed, Oct. 19, 2011
MOUNT PLEASANT -The Iowa Wesleyan College women's soccer team lost a tough battle Wednesday afternoon against Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University 4-3.
The Trojans' winning goal came with 25 seconds left in the game. A no-call on a throw-in instead gave Hannibal a corner kick, and HLG cleaned up a ricochet on the crossing kick that resulted in the game-winning goal.
The Trojans (9-7 overall) started off scoring early at the 1:42 mark. The Tigers (8-9 overall) paced much of the game, though, controlling the ball, and were able to earn two goals back before halftime.
Justine Ferguson (
Fr.-Alsip, Ill.) scored her second goal of the season at the 31:50 mark on an assist by
Jillian Sulcer (
Sr.-Mechanicsburg, Ill.).
Erin Lucido (
Fr.-St. Louis, Mo.) then scored at the 44:33 mark with an assist from
Hannah McElroy (
Fr.-Glen Carbon, Ill.). Lucido's goal was her 12th of the year and broke the school record for most goals in a season. The old record of eleven was set by teammate
Fanny-Koloko-Green (
Sr.-Fremont, Calif.) in 2009.
The Trojans had the wind advantage in the second half and scored goals at the 56:40 and 89:35 marks. An own goal by the Tigers at 75:22 also gave HLG a goal, but didn't stop the Tigers from getting one back from McElroy at the 80:17 mark to tie the match at 3-3. McElroy scored by cleaning up a free kick by
Taylor Scott (
Sr.-Rockton, Ill.).
The Trojans were able to earn the win even after being outshot 20-12.
Kaytlyn Owens (
Fr.-Lake in the Hills, Ill.) earned three saves in goal for the Tigers.
The Tigers will travel to LaCrosse, Wis., on Saturday for their final regular season game against Midwest Collegiate Conference foe Viterbo University. The women's/men's doubleheader will begin with the women's game at 1 p.m., and the men will follow at 3 p.m.
