CLINTON - The Iowa Wesleyan College men's and women's soccer teams both lost to strong teams from Ashford University Saturday afternoon in Midwest Collegiate Conference play.
The IWC men lost to the Saints by a 6-0 score in Saturday's first match, and the Tiger women followed with a 2-0 loss to Ashford in the evening. Both Tiger teams now have one final regular season conference match remaining next Saturday at Viterbo (Wis.) University.
Ashford blew open the men's match in the second half, scoring two goals in a span of 4:08 midway through the half to take a 4-0 lead and then tacking on two more goals in the final four minutes. The Tigers (4-10 overall, 1-6 MCC) got a strong game from goalkeeper Mirko Drsysga
) but spent too much of the game on the defensive and fell to the Saints (11-4 overall, 5-2 in MCC).
Drsysga made 16 saves on goal for Wesleyan before giving way to Jacob Landis
(Fr.-St. Anne, Ill.
) for the final 11 minutes. Lucas Almeida scored a pair of goals for the Saints, while four others added one goal each. The match was delayed in the first half after an injury to IWC's Jason Gonzalez
), who suffered an injury and was diagnosed with a broken tibia.
The women's match followed and the Tigers put up a good fight against a good Ashford team, allowing just two hard luck goals. The Saints scored in the first half just 5:30 before halftime when Hollie Babut took the ball off a ricochet and scored the game's first goal.
The teams went back and forth with possession in the second half, but IWC (8-8 overall, 2-5 MCC) was unable to push across the tying goal despite hitting the crossbar several times. The Saints finally added a second goal with 13:04 left in the match when Tiger goalkeeper Cara Arnold
(Sr.-Davis Junction, Ill.
) mishandled the ball right to Ashford's Alyssa Giancana, who put it in the back of the net.
Arnold finished the match with 12 saves as Ashford outshot the Tigers 25-12, including a 14-5 edge in shots on goal. Kelly Wetherald
(Fr.-Homer Glen, Ill.
) paced IWC with four shots taken in the match.
