The Iowa Wesleyan's College men's soccer team has put together its first winning streak of the season after beating Cornell College 3-2 in a non-conference win on Sunday afternoon at East Lake Park.
It was the second straight win for the IWC men, putting them at 3-5 overall for the season. The win ended a great weekend for Homecoming at Iowa Wesleyan, as both the Tiger men's and women's soccer teams won on Sunday.
Caio Costa (
Fr.-Sao Paolo, Brazil) scored the first goal of the match early at the 5:54 mark, assisted by
Walton Ponce (
Jr.-Muscatine, Iowa). Cornell was able to equalize the game late in the first half on a goal by Kaji Sherpa to go into halftime tied at 1-1.
IWC retook the lead and kept the scoring going with a goal by
Jesus Soto (
Sr.-Roscoe, Ill.) at the 53:56 mark and the final goal came by
Chris Matthews (
Jr.-Toronto, Ontario, Canada) at the 74:25 mark.
Kris Dolinsky (
Fr.-Fishers, Ind.) picked up the lone assist for the Tigers in the second half on Matthews' goal.
Troy Osborne (
Sr.-Sydney, Australia) kept busy in goal with five saves for the Tigers. The Tigers outshot Cornell 29-15. Shots came from a number of IWC players as it helped the Tigers get the win over the Rams, who are now 1-8.
The Tigers will look to continue their winning streak on Wednesday in a Midwest Collegiate Conference matchup against Clarke University. The women will start play at 1 p.m. with the men at 3 p.m. at East Lake Park.
