Trent Hoekstra on the 10th hole at Spirit Hollow on second day of IWC's Fun City Classic

BURLINGTON - Iowa Western Community College edged past St. Ambrose University, coming from behind for the title on the second and final day of the Iowa Wesleyan College Fun City Classic held at Spirit Hollow Golf Course.

Iowa Western defeated St. Ambrose and 15 other teams from 14 schools to win the team title, shooting a second day score of 295 for a final total of 593, three shots ahead of SAU. Iowa Wesleyan, meanwhile, finished 16th of 17 teams, shooting a score of 343 on Wednesday for a final two-day score of 681.

Iowa Western came from one stroke behind St. Ambrose after the first day, beating the Fighting Bees by four shots on Wednesday (295 to 299). Viterbo (Wis.) University finished third with a score of 606, with Mount Mercy University fourth (619) and Wheaton (Ill.) College and Quincy (Ill.) University tying for fifth at 621.

Mariano Rossi of Dodge City (Kan.) CC followed up his tourney-low opening round score of 67 with a 74 on Wednesday to win medalist honors with a total score of three-under par 141. Patrick Goodhue of Iowa Western was second with a score of 144, while Shawn Keenan of Viterbo and both Travis England and Jake Schertz of St. Ambrose all tied for third with scores of 146.

IWC meanwhile was led by Blake Mitchell (So.-Loveland, Colo.), who tied for 70th individually with a score of 166, including a round of 84 on Wednesday. Zach Hale (Jr.-Indianola, Iowa) tied for 73rd, posting a second round 85 and finishing overall one shot behind Mitchell.

Kyle Emerson (Sr.-Mount Pleasant, Iowa) tied for 88th at 174 overall with an 88 on Wednesday. Clint Phelps (Jr.-Quincy, Ill.) tied for 92nd and Trent Hoekstra (Fr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) finished 96th, with Phelps shooting an overall 180 and Hoekstra one shot behind at 181 after shooting 86 on Wednesday.

Wesleyan returns to the course this weekend for the Cropper Golf Classic hosted by Mount Mercy at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion. Play begins at 11 a.m. Saturday and continues Sunday.
