CLINTON - The Iowa Wesleyan College men's and women's cross country teams completed their 2010 season on Saturday at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships on the Ashford University campus.


The Tigers finished eighth at the women's conference meet, which was won by Viterbo (Wis.) University. The IWC men did not finish a complete team and thus did not score as a team. Three Tiger men finished the eight-kilometer men's race, which was won by Mount Mercy University.

LaStacy Freeman (Fr.-St. Louis, Mo.) led the women's team, finishing 44th with a time of 24:57. Breanna Derynck (Fr.-Clarence, Iowa) followed in 48th at 26:16, and she was followed by Caitlyn Jones (Jr.-Cornell, Ill.) at 27:12, Rebecca Wilson (So.-Algonquin, Ill.) at 28:08, and Kellie Wolfe (Sr.-West Point, Iowa) with a time of 28:57.

Viterbo won its first-ever women's title with 36 points, with four-time defending champion Mount Mercy second (63 points), Grand View University third (67) and St. Ambrose University fourth (81). Iowa Wesleyan finished with 243 points, well behind seventh-place Ashford University (199). Obsie Birru of Grand View won her third straight individual title, finishing the 5K in 17:56.

The IWC men were led by Oscar Quintanilla (Fr.-St. Paul, Minn.), who placed 83rd with a time of 36:39. C.J. Earnest (So.-Wapello, Iowa) followed with a time of 37:26, while Idris Labaran (Fr.-Matteson, Ill.) finished in 38:43 in his first race of the season.

Mount Mercy ended St. Ambrose's four-year stronghold on the men's title, finishing with 55 points to edge Grand View by three points. St. Ambrose was third with 79 points, one ahead of William Penn (80). SAU also furnished the individual champion in Kevin Randle, who finished the course in 26:45.
